Peewee AA Take Home Silver at Provincials
A terrific season for the Penticton Tigers ended with a silver medal at the B.C. Under-13 AA Baseball Championship in Surrey on the B.C. Day long weekend.
The Tigers won five straight games at the provincials before bowing 6-4 to the Surrey/Newton Canadians in an exciting championship game.
The Tigers, who went 39-10-1 on the season and won the Okanagan zone title, opened with four straight victories to win their round-robin pool.
Penticton beat Tsawwassen 5-2, Vancouver Community 18-3, Chilliwack 7-4, and Abbotsford 8-3 to set up a semifinal matchup against Campbell River Tyees.
Led by staff ace Mason Sherburne and timely hitting by Nate Weber, Logan Goodwin and Cole Mohns the Tigers defeated a strong Tyees team 7-4.
The win against Campbell River set up a final against a strong Surrey/Newton baseball team that had also gone 4-0 in the round robin and 12-2 during their regular season.
The Tigers got towering home runs by Sherburne and Carson Burnett to score three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
The Canadians bounced back to take the lead with a run in the fourth and five more in the fifth, including a three-run blast by slugger Dre Thomas.
The Tigers countered with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but couldn’t put any more runs on the board after Surrey/Newton brought in ace pitcher Bailey D’Cruze.
The Tigers didn’t go quietly though. Down by two in the bottom of the seventh and final inning, they mounted a rally to load the bases, but D’Cruze buckled down and closed the door to secure the win for the Canadians
